The State of Israel may be regarded as one of the outstanding instances of consummation in history and yet, also, as one of its most mordant ironies. A dream cherished as part of the sacred history of the Jews and of mankind has been transformed into political reality; prayer and prophecy have been fulfilled in the creation of a new polity, the ingathering of the Jewish people, the reconstitution of Jerusalem as its capital city, the revival of Hebrew as a national language.
